It is known that ECF are not independent nosological unit but complication of other serious diseases, accidental or surgical trauma. Chances for recurrence of intestinal fistulas, lost of working capacity, functional disorders and high mortality after re-operation makes ECF one of the severe complications in surgery. This paper traces the development of surgical methods for treatment of this condition and focus on the most significant advances in treatment. The updated literature search and our own clinical experience confirm that this surgical issue is still important.
