Summary/Abstract: The main subjects of the paper are the social changes and personal motives behind Anthony Burgess’s intention to write A Clockwork Orange, as well as the consequences of Kubrick’s popularisation and aesthetisation of violence in the ecranisation of the novel, seen through the psychological profile of an atypical anti-hero, Alex DeLarge, in concordance with the public attitude of the time towards youth culture. Manipulation, frustration, dehumanisation and stereotypisation are vital factors in solving the problems presented here. Besides the literary sources, certain details and events from the lives of the author and the filmmaker have been employed in order to make the revolutionary influences of their works on development of different subcultures easily comprehensible. Today, when it seems that the emphasis on freedom of speech is on its peak, we use this opportunity to ask ourselves whether control and psychological violence are topics as naive as we think.
