Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes some of the events from the reign of Prince DaniloPetrovic (1851-1860). The emphasis is on foreign policy of Montenegro in this period and the aspirations to free Montenegro of Russian influence and patronage. It sets out the circumstances that led to the changeof Prince Danilo’s foreign policy; plans for Montenegro to nominally recognize Turkish suzerainty and try to get other European countries recruited for these plans, whose implementation would mean a shift from pro-Russian policy. Special attention was paid to the battle of Grahovo (1858), territorial expansion that followed the demarcation with Turkey .
