Summary/Abstract: The paper recounts some stories told by the residents of the Karst village of Pliskovica. They told us about things they had used in their youth which are now only on display in their rooms. They recalled how the wheat harvest depended on the saints, on whom they relied when making decisions about when to sow. Food also depended on the seasons. A lot of the food produced was sold in Trieste in order to raise cash. Domestically produced wine was sold to innkeepers. Domestic wealth could be assessed not only by the size of a property, but also by the quality of bread baked in the home. The wealthier families baked white bread, while others made cornbread. One of our informants told us the story of a strange gentleman who once came to the village looking for a barber...
