Summary/Abstract: The present article overviews some key Bulgarian publications on the middle class, focusing on the important starting points of research and on the definition of this social category. The leading thesis in the publications in question is that the middle class is of great importance for society in that it creates stability and ensures social balance and growth because it encompasses active, enterprising and educated people. Its identification in the Bulgarian case points to its convergence and similarity here with the stratification structures in developed societies.
