Summary/Abstract: Originality of the function of steady verbal complexes employed by athletes in their professional discourse is considered in the article.A distinguished system of terminology normally develops in special areas of life where the language “for special purposes” is used; therefore,it is necessary to analyze specifics of the compound verbal units inherent to special terminology. Linguists call them compound termsor nomenclature names. Similar units are systematized in terminological dictionaries and reference books and are found on the peripheryof phraseology. Universality of these units and their transformation ability allowed us to distinguish a particular way of their structuralorganization – a matrix. Matrix structures are rather mobile and optimally meet communication needs of multiple experts. In our researchthe category of matrix is understood as a stereotypic speech structure allowing replacement of its compounds (components). Most often it isa binomial structure with subordinate relations between components. One of the components (the main one as a rule) is invariable, or basic, and the second one can vary. The relevance of the meta term matrix against such nominations as speech clichés, clichéd designs, verbalstereotypes, speech stereotypes is substantiated in the article. Characteristic features of the structures meeting the concept of the matrix infocus are described. Limits of the matrix variations met in the athletic discourse are analyzed. The typology of matrix structures with grammaticalcharacteristics of components, quantitative structures, opportunities of modification of the “right” or “left” member is developed.
