The paper presents and ponders doubts related to the concept of metaphilosophy. By this, it is ranked, as we could say, on the positions of meta-metaphilosophy, or else, as the author himself prefers to present it, as the theory of metaphilosophy. An attempt has been made to distinguish metaphilosophy both from the autoreflexive philosophical discourse on philosophy (likes Fichte’s or Husserl’s) and the external utterances concerning philosophy, characteristic either of the history of philosophy, or, as the author himself calls it, characteristic of philosophical systematics which encompasses numerous introductions to philosophy and presents it in a systematic order. At some point, what seems most fruitful to the author in defining the framework of metaphilosophy is the narrative approach typical of literary studies (it is worth remembering that the narratological methods have already been instilled in disciplines other than the literary theory by such authors as Hayden White and Paul Ricoeur). According to this approach, metaphilosophy would be characterized by the most distant author’s point of view (where the author plays the role of the “narrator”) in relation to philosophical objects which are explored by the said author. Since discovering different types of proximity and distance of a speaking authority towards the presented world is the “bread and butter” of the literary theory, narratology presents itself with a particularly useful set of tools to someone who seeks the essence of metaphilosophy just in the phenomenon of the distance.
