Summary/Abstract: In his contribution to the discussion on the study by József Böröcz and Mahua Sarkar, entitled "What is the European Union?" and published in Vol. XIV. Nos. 3-4. (pp. 151-177) of this journal, the author makes reference to V. I. Lenin's article on the slogan for a United States of Europe and points out its theoretical and historical mistakes. Drawing comparison between Lenin's views and those of Böröcz and Sarkar, the author refutes the historically and logically untenable conclusions drawn from postcolonial and economic sociological perspectives, and stresses the need of a complex world system and regional sub-system analysis. The European Union, evolving as an integrated and, at the same time, differentiated economic and political sub-system of the modern world system, possesses all non-linear and dynamical attributes of a complex social system. For a more detailed explication see the author's recently published book on the evolution of the complex world system (A komplex világrendszer evolúciója. Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, 2006.).
