Summary/Abstract: These Initial Theses postulate that the Twentieth Century is a time of betrayals. How come? What are we to see history as and for? And is What really distinguishable from How? From such questions, the Theses GO ON TO consider some facets of historical macro-periodization, the role of science as a new dominant beliefsystem, and the greatest exception from betrayals- 20th Century art. lt opposes poetic justice and beauty to the century's mass murderings, the rule of bureaucracy and army. THE THESES FINALLY ASK what is the position of intellectuals within such a horizon. For, „any erroneous understanding of truth is simultaneously an erroneous understanding of freedom“ (Marcuse).
