Summary/Abstract: The article examines several projects related to the utilization of the industrial heritage of cultural and creative industries, which have been turned into pillars of Sofia's application for European Capital of Culture. One of the priorities of these projects is the transformation of peripheral industrial areas and buildings into secondary cultural and tourist centres. Among the main objectives are the revival of abandoned and unused industrial spaces and the finding of places for many artists. Along with these undoubtedly positive initiatives there is a different perspective as well. It is associated with unreflective imposing of the urban commercial order (characteristic of the city centre) onto the peripheral, alternative art spaces, depriving the audience and the city of those isolated, dilapidated, problematic places which have the potential to provoke and reconsider the imposed rationality.
