Summary/Abstract: have chosen this motto because it expresses, most synthetically and clearly, the major confusion which ceaselessly ”haunts” this artistic genre from its very beginning and never stops stirring disputes even today. As a director of documentaries, I modestly dare to enter this <<never ending>> argument, putting together, reviewing and synthetizing some of the most competent opinions on this subject and trying to bring, in my turn, from the practitioner’s point of view, just a few small clarifications and opinions. The aim of the present material is to analyse, on the one hand, the thorny problem of „the objectivity” of the documentary towards the filmed reality and, on the other hand, to what extent and in what way the director’s subjectivity in the documentary film is acceptable and desirable.
