The Theater in Terezin and the Second Czech Caberet: "Spiritual Resistance"?

Summary/Abstract: Phrases such as "spiritual resistance" have been used to describe the phenomenon of art created by concentration camp prisoners, but seldom are the works themselves analyzed for what they have to tell us about how the prisoners experienced the conditions of their captivity. After examining specific features of the ghetto Theresienstadt that allowed a rich cultural life to emerge, the author discusses in detail the text of a cabaret written there: within the fictional space of the theater, how did the prisoners attempt to shape their encounter with the reality in which they were forced to live?
