Summary/Abstract: In Soviet ideology, the influence of patriotism had already formed before the Great Patriotic War. Beside historiography, evidence can be found in novels, dramas, movies and patriotic partyleaders' speeches. The promoting propaganda brocchures' favorite themes were Aleksandr Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin, Dmitry Pozharsky, Suvorov and Kutuzov. Beside Russians, they emphasized other nations' heroic traditions too, but after the favourable turn in the war, this was overshadowed by the one sided praising of Russians. The ideological apparat's position wasn't unified: historians divided into the internationalist and Russian patriotic schools.
