Summary/Abstract: The article introduces to scholarship the case of the namesake saints Theodore Tiron and Theodore Stratelates by examining the tradition. According to the sources, the cult of Theodore Tiron arose in the fourth century and soon became very popular, whereas the cult of Theodore Stratelates, attested since the ninth century, was created after the pattern of the older cult as that of a military saint, a miracle maker and a dragon slayer, a patronsaint of the imperial family and the Byzantine army. The dissemination of the cults, the hagiographic works dedicated to the saints, their distribution in the Byzantine and in the early Slavic manuscript tradition, and the iconography are discussed. The author also comments on various hypotheses about the reasons for the appearance of a second saint with essentially the same functions and features.
