Summary/Abstract: The paper is an attempt at opening a perspective on the diversity of voices in the representations of Europe created by regional Bulgarian authors. The first and larger part of the report outlines the theoretical framework for the exploration, drawing mainly on the concept of cultural intimacy and ’diglossia’ as developed by the Harvard anthropologist Michael Herzfeld, as well as on the concept of implicit or ’hidden’ knowledge introduced by anthropologists such as M. Taussig and M. van de Port. The second part of the article presents a short case study of the discourses and images of Europe in the area of Trun, Western Bulgaria, where the author has conducted fieldwork since 1997. Its aim is to highlight the opportunities opened by this theoretical perspective when a ’native’ ethnologist is engaged in studying one’s own culture.
