Summary/Abstract: The article aims at discussing the problem of changes that the symbolic meaning of a river is going through when used by Polish authors who create their poems in a geographical and cultural context which is completely different from their native one. The examples are taken from Teresa Podemska-Abt’s works. Her poems written in Australia reveal an interesting recontextualization of the sign of a river and modification of the symbolic meanings it evokes.
