Summary/Abstract: In traditional public space, before being published, information would be filtered by gatekeepers, journalists and editors. Two criticisms were adressed to the hegemonic power that these institutions imposed on the order of information. The first is that they are partial and select information according to their own economic and politic interests. The second is that they obliterate the subjective diversity of expressions. In this article, we try to demonstrate that the Web offers two very different alternatives in connection with these problems. The algorithm of “neutrality” has been conceived of as an alternative to the human bias of gatekeepers. Social network sites provide internauts with the capacity to themselves rank the information they want to share. The article discusses how these two information ranking principles are linked to a new dimension of the process of individualization in our societies.
