Summary/Abstract: In the 1860s artistic world was fascinated by the studies of ancient history. The Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg also favored Hellas and ancient Rome in the choice of topics. Among sciences which expanded the area of historical knowledge in the 18th century, archeology was one of the youngest, and in the 19th century it reached its heyday. Intensive excavations revealed new aspects of the ancient world, discovered art works evoked great interest. “Greek Revival” became one of the leading trends in academic painting of the period, and Semiradzki who had classical university education and was a consistent adherent of the classics, could not remain indifferent to this trend, and devoted his art to the grand and magnificent world of Greco-Roman culture. He was an artist with ideals to which he was loyal all his life: he did not have students but had a large number of followers such as S. Bakalovich, P. and A. Svedomski, W. Kotarbinski and V. Smirnov.
