Summary/Abstract: Currently, the world’s largest healthcare and economic challenge is the growing problem of overweight and obesity. There are many other diet-related diseases requiring specialized nutritional therapy. Only a qualified dietitian has adequate knowledge and experience to recommend a specific diet. It has been proved that the change in unhealthy eating habits and increased physical activity has a beneficial effect on reducing morbidity and mortality rate. The author takes a look at the professional dietician experience in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the USA. The paper has been written to analyze and assess the relevance of a dietician profession in the healthcare system in the context of the professional conditions. This topic is rarely undertaken in the Polish scientific publications. The article examines the literature on the subject – domestic and foreign laws, draft laws, judicial decisions, regulations, dietician associations, reports of international organizations. Poland is one of the few countries in the European Union in which the profession of dietetics is not regulated and protected by law. It has been found that in most highly developed countries, a dietician is an integral part of the therapeutic unit. A dietician is able not only to plan nutrition for healthy and sick people, but also to evaluate their nutritional status, take an active part in the prevention and treatment of diet-related diseases as well as protect and promote healthy habits.
