Summary/Abstract: Bishop Josip Strossmayer has been a figure that made contributions to various fields of public life, playing an active role not only in the religious sphere but also in politics and cultural activities. He retreated from the political arena early but never lost his faith in the potential of the arts and education to improve people’s life. The article focuses on his projects in this sphere, to which a focal point became the town of Zagreb that was emerging as a centre of Croatian public life in the second half of the 19th century. The catholic bishop, who also left traces in Bulgarian history with initiatives such as the support for publishing the famous collection Bulgarian Folk Songs of brothers Dimitar and Konstantin Miladinov, was the driving force behind major projects such as the establishment of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts and the modern University of Zagreb. The article examines some details in the process of creation of these institutions as part of Zagreb’s overall development in the second half of the 19th century.
