Summary/Abstract: Our article proposes an analysis of the relationship between collective creation, labeled as devised theatre beginning with the 1990s, and performance. Considered to be a form of theatre that stimulates interdisciplinarity and creativity, devised theatre is a source of theatrical innovation. From Living Theatre to contemporary collectives, such as Forced Entertainment or Rimini Protokoll, devised theatre inserts eclectic, non-theatrical, paradoxical elements into the theatrical performance dramaturgy, thus redefining theatricality through formal intersections with performance art. Collective creation is responsible for major theatrical productions, and is relevant for contextualizing contemporary creation. In the last decades, a revival of collective creation can be observed both in the European and American theatre scene, especially in independent theatre. The devised creative process involves major time and energy investment, correlated in many cases with financial uncertainties, but it remains a form that generates innovation and interdisciplinarity.
