Summary/Abstract: Market economies do not develop harmoniously. They are dealing with fluctuations. In some periods markets are developing quickly, in some slowly, and in others they fall into recession. We can make the thesis that their development is subject to cyclical fluctuations. The paper presents the genesis and consequences of business cycles in the modern economy based on views focused in two schools - the Keynesian economics and monetarist. An explanation for the mechanism of cycles in the economy will help to understand the factors affecting situation on the market. Consequently it will help to predict time and location of the crisis and allow to prepare and effectively counteract to its effects.
