Summary/Abstract: Abstract. The article analyzes the social reality of the Romanian Roma against the background of the approach lately taken by the Italian authorities towards Roma (and generally Romanian) migrants. In addition to a critical assessment of the European structures involved, the existing literature on the topic is surveyed. Romania is home to one of the largest and most heterogeneous Roma populations. For the most part, the Roma communities do not enjoy equal effective participation in society. Both historical and more recent reasons that have contributed to this situation are contextualized along a case study from Transylvania. Departing from an overview of the Romanies’ living conditions and social contexts, the structures and effects of Romanian integration policies with regard to the Roma are discussed.
