Summary/Abstract: The AIDS pandemic is unprecedented with its serious medical and demographic consequences. Having appeared two decades ago and developed as three interrelated processes, i. e. infection and spread of contagion, manifestation of disease and a wave of social reactions, it creates problems difficult to solve. According to historical data AIDS is not a new disease but its epidemic and pandemic nature is of somewhat later times. The disease specifics — a big number of infection carriers and a relatively later manifestation of clinical symptoms with lack of effective medicines — are the major factors for the fast spread of AIDS. The epidemic progress has been traced by geographical regions. Analysis is being made of available data of the spread of AIDS in Bulgaria. The factors leading to the disease progress in the world have been presented most generally. The conclusion is drawn that during the last two decades mankind has faced a new illness of enormous social, medical and demographic consequences. The world is not yet ready with its anti-measures.
