Summary/Abstract: This article is dedicated to the first commander of the Bulgarian navy, Lieutenant Commander Alexander Egorovich Konkevich. His biography is given in a very succinct form, as it is well-known to Bulgarian readers, although his name was written incorrectly in Bulgarian historiography for quite a long time and his life and career were frequently presented with blank spots. The newly-discovered portrait of this remarkable Russian officer with exceptional service to the development of the Bulgarian navy and naval education in Bulgaria is central to the article. The profound comprehensive analysis of the recently discovered family photo of the command of the corvette Boyarin in 1869–1870, taken in San Francisco, USA, permits the conclusion that this is truly an authentic photo which also includes Konkevich as a member of the corvette’s crew. Thus the first publication of the newly-discovered portrait for the first time crowns the research in this direction which continued for over 80 years.
