Summary/Abstract: The article explores the mechanism of public consultations in the European Union and Bulgaria. It describes the political context in which EU decided to adopt a structure way for conducting public consultations from the beginning of the new millennium, the process of embedding the culture to consult the policies of the Union with its citizens and organizations through integrating it in the general mechanism for impact assessment in the EU. The part dedicated to the process of public consultations in Bulgaria depicts the existing legal arrangements and the new proposals for its future improvement as well as the basic principles and rules set forth in the Standards for Conducting Public Consultations of the Bulgarian Government from 2009. In the end the author has made specific recommendations for improving the mechanism and enhancing the effectiveness of the mechanism for public consultations in Bulgaria.
