Summary/Abstract: The paper treats the dichotomy individualism/ collectivism as a product of the late Cold War. It reflects a purely Western perspective on that ideological conflict. Individualism is not perceived to be an ideology by those whose ideology it is. The individualisation of the social sciences in the West, with special reference to the historical development of social psychology, is treated as an instance of the working out of this particular ideology.
