Summary/Abstract: The stratigraphic sequences from Oltenia attest to the presence of Gumelnita populations in the area. The archaeological record contains frequent evidence dating from the Gumelnita period, including some of the most diverse artefact complexes discovered in the area, indicating that occupation was consistent throughout the period. This paper will compare the Salcuta type artefacts with the Gumelnita artefacts, and show that there are similarities between the materials used in their manufacture and their morphology. As a result of the common elements identified within the artefacts it is not yet possible to distinguish between the two south Carpathian Neolithic cultures, Salcuta and Gumelnita, even though there are chronological differences. It does appear that the Salcuta culture has it origins in Gumelnita culture, as illustrated by the materials and constructional techniques used in artefact manufacture together with the apparent approaches to spirituality.
