Summary/Abstract: Mountainous areas may tend to occupy a marginal position on present day economic priority lists, but they are runner-up favorites as touristic destinations. Due to climate change these areas used up earlier by ski resorts will diversify and open towards other, land- and waterbased, snowless services. The central challenge is maintaining a triangle of sustainability: ecological, economic and socio-cultural elements must be balanced in order to keep tourism sustainable.
