Summary/Abstract: Following the collapse of communism in Romania and until the middle of the 1990s, about 30 incidents of mob violence were committed against the Romani community. Hundreds of houses were burnt and several people were lynched: a total of 11 people died. In some instances authorities were present but did not effectively intervene to prevent the significant or fatal results. Even later, the authorities refused to address the complaints of the victims which were filed several times with the support of human rights NGOs.
