Summary/Abstract: This study has its focus on the broadcast (programme) as subject-matter of the related rights of the broadcasting organizations. It attempts to outline the main characteristics of the notion of broadcast for the purposes of the system of related rights. It also points out the problematic areas of the relevant legislation and proposes possible solutions for its improvement. The notion of broadcast is examined in perspective considering the influence of the latest technological and social developments. The first part points out the subject-matter of related rights of the broadcasting organizations and why the broadcast is considered a social valuable, which is worth legal regulation. The second part examines the link between the broadcast as subject-matter of related rights and its original use in the system of authors’ rights, which is essential to understanding the core characteristics of the notion. The third part outlines the main characteristics of the broadcast as derived from the presently effective legislation. It is also where the shortcomings of the legislation are defined and addressed. The fourth part contains an overview of the new types of transmitting sounds and images as an area, to which the notion of broadcast could be extended in the future. The last part draws conclusions and proposes a theoretical definition of the notion of broadcast.
