Summary/Abstract: Multicultural societies have to tackle many problems that arise from their character – multicultural societies need to find ways of reconciling the legitimate demands of unity and diversity, achieving political unity without cultural uniformity, being inclusive without being assimilationist and cultivating among their citizens a common sense of belonging while respecting their legitimate cultural differences. Drawing on material from Western European countries which have sought in various ways to tackle such questions, this contribution addresses some of the issues raised by what is generally, if vaguely, called “multiculturalism", and asks how might a “multicultural” Europe be constituted.
