Summary/Abstract: Despite the attention that literary scholars have paid to Georg Johannesen’s collection of poems Ars Moriendi eller de syv dødsmåter (1965) one cannot find many studies which have addressed the collection’s semantic structure. This concerns especially the use of paradox, an element which is very typical of this text. By applying the concept of paradox by Willard Van Orman Quine and Gottlob Frege’s distinguishing between “reference” vs. “sense” (Bedeutung vs. Sinn), this article argues that Johannesen’s use of paradox reinforces the aesthetic effect of the text by increasing the intensity and semantic tension of the poems.
