Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to explore the possibility for the emerging of sociology of failure and to suggest arguments for the investigation of the unsuccessful phenomena. These arguments are: the reversibility of social development, the fundamental historical nature of social phenomena and their importance for the extension of knowledge. The article discusses the issue whether there could be reached a shared, universal understanding of failure or whether its definition will always be related to a concrete social reality and will be culturally relative. The article pictures the different faces of failure – individual or collective; the project-failure or the realization-failure; the possible-but-unachieved social; the started-but-not-evolved social; the vanished social. The author delineates several independent sociological perspectives of investigation of the unsuccessful social phenomena and analyses the cognitive limitations and prospects of the sociologist’s return to the past.
