Photography in the Media: Historical Reconstruction (From National Revival 19th century to the Late Socialism)

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the changing historical forms of photographic image in the Bulgarian print media. Several successive models are emphasized. The text demonstrates the complex interconnections between the image and additional determining factors coming from the social milieu. Parallels with different systems of representation are outlined. The dynamic of relationships’ image-text is brought into contact with broad sociological perspectives of changing political and cultural context. The photography is used as a productive terrain for the investigation of different journalistic strategies concerning the construction of fact, sensation and propaganda discourse.
