Summary/Abstract: The spreading of unmarried cohabitations in Western Europe and the United States is under examination in connection with the falling nuptiality in these countries during the last 20-30 years. While in Western Europe the total number of couples (married and unmarried) remains relatively constant, in the USA the failing nuptiality is not compensated for by cohabitations and the total number of couples decreases. In Eastern Europe cohabitations are less frequent, except for the GDR where the family models are similar to those in Western Europe. In Hungary and Bulgaria there are two types of cohabitation out of marriage: of traditional type and of modern type. Only the second one (which claims relatively smaller share in the total number of cohabitations) has the social characteristics of cohabitations in Western Europe.
