Summary/Abstract: First, the author gives a concise survey on the changes in human relationships that occurred due to technical innovations in human communication. Next, she examines the influence of today's electronic communication on the family as a system. She gives illustrative examples of how contemporary communication modifies the boundary between the family and the outside world, in which extent it shapes the structure, the rules and the hierarchy of the families. Last, the author emphasizes that -similarly to other changes- also the new forms of communication can topple the balance of the family system. A new balance will be able to set in only if family members learn how to handle the technical possibilities and if they decide which ones of their relationships they want to maintain and which ones they wish to abandon.
