Summary/Abstract: This text proposes an interpretative reading of Nietzsche’s early essay “On Truth and Lie in an Extra-moral Sense”, dating from 1873, in which, using a philological strategy, the philosopher attempts to reveal the appearance of the impulse, or rather the urge, towards truth (trieb zur Warheit) and its implications for human life. The main issues discussed in this article include several main questions: From what standpoint is the extra-moral query made? What is the value of truth in the moral and extra-moral context? What is the relationship between morals and truth? The thinking provoked by these questions leads to an opposition that will prove constitutive for Nietzsche’s philosophy not only in his youthful works but in his whole oeuvre; this opposition will place him in an unprecedented extra-moral dimension, from where he will contemplate the ruins of the Western onto-theological tradition.
