Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the past and current states of centrifugal tendencies within Ukraine determining the impact of historical legacy and modern factors on the encouraging or discouraging of separartism in the country. Its overall analysis demonstrates that regardless of the strong historical rhetoric employed by proponents of separatism, the primacy impact on the separatist issues comes from external support (on the elite level) and is also connected with the population's dissatisfaction with Ukrainian political and economic performance (on the societal level).
