“And Glory Appeared to Me Across…” Alternative Religiousness and the “Contact” with the Supernatural

Summary/Abstract: The author investigates the multifaceted aspects and figures of religiousness, defined by her as “alternative” The alternative religiousness lives in the periphery of “formal”, institutional religion. Hence the dual, often hostile attitude of the clergy to its manifestations. The fundamental bearers of this alternative religiousness are the women. Analysing the life stories of two of them, the author points to the viability and adaptability of alternative religiousness both under socialism and in the post-totalitarian period.
