Summary/Abstract: Investigations of folklore artifacts are the topic of this article, presenting research related to the national program „Knowledge Technologies for Creation of Digital Presentation and Significant Repositories of Folk Heritage” (FolkKnow) with program manager G. Bogdanova. FolkKnow aims to build a multimedia digital archive “Bulgarian Folk Heritage” (BFH) and virtual information portal with folk media library of digitized multimedia objects from a selected collection of the fund of the NCICH, Institute of Folklore at BAS. The realization of the project FolkKnow gives opportunity for wide social applications of the multimedia collections, for the purposes of Interactive distance learning/self-learning, research activities in the field of Bulgarian traditional culture and for the cultural and ethno-tourism. FolkKnow encompasses four satellite research projects, which are interrelated: Module 1: Creation and exhibition of fund “Bulgarian Folk Heritage”; Module 2: Development, annotation and protection of a digital fund; Module 3: Development of digital libraries and information portal with virtual expositions for BFH; Module 4: Socially orientated applications of the BFH in education, scientific research and cultural tourism. This article briefly reviews all the software tools in the FolkKnow and more detail is presented about software developed in Module 2 (with project manager G. Bogdanova). The main research tasks are: a digital archive of folk materials by knowledge-based modern technologies, digital library and Information artery to be created for the modern presentation in a virtual form of valuable artifacts of the Bulgarian folklore heritage. The work is in several directions: Digital archive; Digital folk library; Socially-oriented applications and virtual exhibitions artery; Storage, protection and effective access to data archive; Additional folklore sources and Teaching the young specialists. The article briefly presents some research and software implementations developed by the Module 2 team: methods of digitization of selected collections; methods of analysis of the digital objects; specialized frequency dictionary; system for scientific publications of folklore themes and compression of information.
