Institutional support for sustainable local economic development-experiences and practices of the Italian region

Summary/Abstract: Sustainable local economic development is a complex process which is based on the capacity of all the local actors to transform the local territory and to sustainable manage the basic local variables.The local institutions play the main role in the sustainable transformation of the territory as they are the policy makers that should be capable of generating and diffusion not only of material, but also of immaterial public goods, management of the various local development activities and coordination between economic operators. The local institutions should build relationship of trust and confidence with all the local stakeholders, and especially with the small and medium enterprises as they are the protagonists of the sustainable economic development and therefore the main partners of the institutions in the development process. The small and medium enterprises are strongly linked with the territory and for that reason care not only about profit but also about the cultural and environmental values by helping individual empowerment and supporting sustainable usage of the resources. The challenge of the local institutions is to find successful ways for support of the local enterprises by not jeopardizing the sustainability of ecosystems and the community systems. Only that way the local economic development can durable and sustainable.
