Summary/Abstract: In the history of mankind, urbanization knew various patterns and ways to manifest. Important changes in social values lie behind these changes. These transformations of the patterns of thinking are not uniform within any society, not to mention the global world. However, through contagion, new patterns of modernizing the city, of urbanizing the localities are borrowed, through contagion from a culture to another. This is the argument that I develop in the paper, particularizing the examples for the Romanian case, which may nevertheless extend to the entire former communist area. I firstly discuss the background, referring some of the main values shared by the Romanian population. Then, I focus on the impact of values on the postcommunist urbanization. In argumentation, I use survey data, official statistics and personal observations to describe the challenges that urban communities have to face off. However, these empirical evidences are not systematic, but represent a convenience set of data useful in arguing on the described reality. In the conclusive section, I discuss possible changes that may affect the current situation in the nearest future.
