Summary/Abstract: The contents of the genizah found in the attic of the Jičín Synagogue were removed prior to the building’s reconstruction in May 2002. This difficult and dirty task was undertaken by the synagogue warden Jan Kindermann in collaboration with V. Drahoňovský under the specialist supervision of Jewish Museum in Prague staff. Of the eight boxes of written material that were found, however, only one contained documents that were roughly identifiable. They were in a very poor condition, having been damaged by mould, rodents, soot (from a roof fire in 1840), dust and inappropriate handling during roof repairs in the 1960s. Nonetheless, the little that could be identified and preserved is a valuable reminder of the defunct Jewish community of Jičín.
