Summary/Abstract: The contemporary developmental of international environment led to the emergence of threats to the security of states that can be combated only through associations of states, often under the form of alliances. Alliance membership however involves also assuming some obligations including participation in multinational operations, operations which proved to be the only viable solution to maintaining and enforcing peace. In these circumstances, is incumbent to Romania, as a full member of NATO and the European Union to participate in multinational operations initiated by these. This participation generates periodically discussion about its appropriateness and usefulness. We propose, starting from historical precedents and from analyses of the necessity of actions, of risks, benefits and losses generated for Romania by taking on the obligations arising from treaties of alliance, to demonstrate the absence of a rational alternative to Romanian participation in multinational operations.
