Summary/Abstract: The article presents images and concepts of death and the world beyond, as well as relevant ritual practices, found in the village of Galata, Teteven region – semi-mountainous village, densely populated by Bulgarian Muslims. The data concerns both personal and collective experience. Death is a fact, a case in individual or group existence, as well as a phenomenon, carrying out in itself collective images, concepts, symbols and meaning. Cultural, ideological and religious complexes are investigated in their “genre” aspects – rites, believes, narratives (personal and traditional), as well as thematically: lifetime and predicting death; dying; the dead and his soul; the world beyond; the dead among those still alive. Special attention is paid to the existence of syncretism, heterogeneity and changes in world views.
