Summary/Abstract: The author has adopted an innovative, semiotic approach to the mid-15th-century Byzantine historians Doukas, Kritoboulos and Laonikos Chalkokondylos who describe the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. Further, he dwells on another two texts of lesser popularity: Georgilas' Lamentation and the so-calledChronicle of the Turkish Sultans. The article sheds some additional light on the mentalités of the epoch as well as on the Byzantine concepts of the Other and the Enemy.
