Summary/Abstract: Analysed more often than not as a significant contribution to the modern novel, brilliantly anticipating the ideas and techniques of modernism, Conrad’s work can be also read as a challenge to the accepted views on imperialism valid in the 19th century. Conrad’s analysis is carried out from the perspective of the exile questioning the immutable and incontestable imperialistic values at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, when Great Britain’s expansionist policy was a taboo subject, forbidden thus to literary representation.
