Summary/Abstract: Vadim Lazarkevic justly called ‘the father of Bulgarian illustrations for children’ had the talent to bring life to everything he touched giving it individuality, i.e. flesh and soul. His creative work can be described as unity of: 1) ‘magic realism’ in the sense of turning the everyday well known into an enchanted world of unlimited possibilities for the imagination and the mind; 2) respect for life in all its forms and 3) profound knowledge-feeling for the heart of the child. The artist has travelled a long way from Secession to his own unique style of story-teller. All this - in order to impose his unique vision of the children’s universe and to prove himself as an artist of exquisite drawing and as a wonderful virtuoso of color combinations. We can sadly regret the fact that due to the limitations of the age and the local nature of Bulgarian culture he could not grow as one of the great artists of animation since his talent was truly cinematographic. His tales in pictures inspired by the sufferers of Ran Bosilek, for example, are actually very close to the comics, i.e. stories in pictures. They did not simply illustrate the action but led a parallel narrative story in images.
