Summary/Abstract: The article examines contradictions in Russian national politics between ethnocultural diversity and citizenship-based universalism. First of all, the author shows the inconsistencies and dangers that characterize the new Russian national politics. Furthermore, he points out the intrinsic difficulties the national politics faces up in the new age. The crucial dimension of the first difficulty is connected to the definition of the nation on the basis of universalism. In consequence, we are faced with the revitalization of the old Soviet patterns with the danger of assimilation. The second difficulty is the opportunity of endorsing of ethnocratic rule in the political entities. The multiculturality-based constitutional patriotism is endangered by the Russian nationalism and the ethnocratic tendencies at the same time. At the end of the article the author comes to the conclusion that Serbia will be challenged by the similar problems in the future.
